Premier Kathleen Wynne unveiled her bigger, shuffled cabinet this week and, with it, some new and divided ministries in order to give each of the 30 members of executive council (including seven backbenchers) a portfolio. Here's what the government says those ministries will do.

The Ministry of Infrastructure, led by ex-energy head Bob Chiarelli, who once held the post under Dalton McGuinty, is now a standalone that will help guide the government's $160-billion 12-year infrastructure plan and develop its next 10-year capital plan. Chiarelli will be the point man for infrastructure agreements with Ottawa and for implementing infrastructure commitments made in the climate change action plan. The ministry will also handle the Liberals' Community Hubs project, which will be virtual or bricks-and-mortar centres that provide access to health and social resources.

That prompted a re-christening of the Ministry of Economic Development and Growth, with Brad Duguid remaining at the helm. The tacked-on "growth" moniker reflects the government's "jobs and growth" priority, which will see it put up $400 million over the next five years to boost employment as part of the "Business Growth Initiative." Growth is also one word that aptly reflects Wynne's cabinet expansion.

Deputy Premier and Cabinet Chair Deb Matthews will head up the new and (perhaps fittingly) verbose Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development, in addition to her role as the first minister responsible for digital government. Her ministry will implement the Liberals' affordable tuition plan outlined in the February budget, and her mandate is that of the now-defunct Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. Don't weep for its former minister, Reza Moridi, just yet; he's still at the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Science (emphasis on the appended "science"), for which a chief science officer role will be established.

The International Trade Ministry, run by Michael Chan, split from Citizenship and Immigration, which will be handled by Laura Albanese. The difference here is that the latter will focus on ensuring new citizens prosper, and the former will deal with overseas trade promotions and agreements, like those inked when Wynne went to the Middle East earlier this year with an entourage that did not include Chan.

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing was also divided and will be steered by Bill Mauro and Chris Ballard, respectively. Both will fill the shoes of Ted McMeekin, a.k.a. the "cabinet whisperer", who resigned in the name of gender parity. Whereas Municipal Affairs and Mauro will handle cities and land use planning, Housing and Ballard will focus on social and affordable housing and poverty and homelessness reduction strategies.

Tracy MacCharles, demoted from children and youth minister to one without portfolio after being grilled by parents and the opposition over the government's handling of the autism file, is now in charge of the accessibility ministry. She will "be responsible for helping people with disabilities realize their full potential" as well as overseeing implementation of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. MacCharles keeps her role as minister responsible for women's issues.

The associate health minister portfolio appears to have gone up in smoke, its death knell arguably being Bill 178, which passed just before the summer break. The legislation amended the Smoke Free Ontario Act to effectively ban vaping and smoking of medical marijuana in public. The bill was the brainchild of former associate minister of health Dipika Damerla, who is now heading up Seniors Affairs after Mario Sergio stepped down.

The premier has yet to re-issue mandate letters to her shuffled cabinet.
