The following bills will come before the house or committee this week as the legislature continues its spring sitting:

Bill 6, the infrastructure for jobs and prosperity act, was introduced July 7 by Infrastructure Minister Brad Duguid. The act goes to the house for second-reading debate Wednesday.

Bill 9, the ending coal for cleaner air act, faces second-reading debate Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning. The bill, which would end the use of coal at electricity generating facilities, reflects the shutdown of Ontario’s coal-fired power plants by the end of 2014.

Bill 31, the transportation statue law amendment act (making Ontario’s roads safer), was tabled by Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca on Oct. 21 and passed second reading last month. The proposed new law would incorporate earlier bills on distracted driving as well as 2013’s Bill 34, which required the payment of parking tickets and other violations before the Ministry of Transportation issues or renews a licence plate permit. The act went to the house for third reading Monday afternoon.

Bill 73, the smart growth for our communities act, was tabled by Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Ted McMeekin last month and passed second reading April 21. The act proposes changes to the planning act that would encourage more resident participation in the planning process for new developments and help municipalities resolve planning disputes sooner, reducing Ontario Municipal Board involvement. It also would amend the development charges act to help municipalities recover costs for transit services and waste diversion. The act went to the house for second reading Tuesday.

Bill 80, the marine mammals act, was tabled for first reading March 23 by Yasir Naqvi, the minister of community safety and correctional services. The legislation bans the acquisition and breeding of orca whales, and enables new safety regulations on marine mammals in captivity. The bill would make Ontario the first Canadian jurisdiction to set specific standards of care for marine mammals. The bill was put before the house for time allocation debate Tuesday afternoon.
