MPPs are in for an exciting week of debate on the budget motion — and they'll also get a chance to argue about the McVety affair.
Government House Leader Paul Calandra told the House he intends to call <a href="https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-42/session-1/bill-213" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bill 213, the Better for People, Smarter for Business Act, 2020</a> for debate on Monday. It's an omnibus bill from the associate minister of small business and red tape reduction that, among other things, includes a schedule that would give Charles McVety's Canada Christian College the ability to grant university degrees. Arguments over McVety's well-documented history of bigoted views have been a feature of question period debate of late as well. There will also be debate on Monday on an opposition day motion on the man himself.
Calandra said MPPs will debate the budget motion Tuesday through Thursday.
The government will also bring forward two Progressive Conservative private members members' bills as part of an effort to get more of them passed, said Calandra. One is <a href="https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-42/session-1/bill-201" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bill 201, Magna Carta Day Act (In Memory of Julia Munro, MPP), 2020,</a> which would proclaim June 15 of every year Magna Carta Day. The other — and Calandra seemed particularly excited about this one — is <a href="https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-42/session-1/bill-214" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bill 214, Time Amendment Act, 2020</a>, a private member's bill from MPP Jeremy Roberts that would see Ontario ditch the annual spring forward and fall back business — but it might only be proclaimed if Ontario's neighbouring jurisdictions make the change too.

The Standing Committee on General Government will consider <a href="https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-42/session-1/bill-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bill 3, Compassionate Care Act, 2018</a>, a private member's bill from PC MPP Sam Oosterhoff that would require the ministers of health and long-term care to develop a provincial framework designed to support improved access to hospice palliative care.
The Standing Committee on the Legislative Assembly will study <a href="https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-42/session-1/bill-214" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bill 214, Time Amendment Act, 2020</a>.
The Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs will meet for clause-by-clause consideration of <a href="https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-42/session-1/bill-215" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bill 215, Main Street Recovery Act, 2020</a>, another omnibus red tape bill from the associate minister of red tape reduction, Prabmeet Sarkaria. It includes changes such as allowing deliveries to be made to businesses 24/7 and increasing fines for illegal taxi operators. This was initially scheduled for last week but was cancelled.

Second Reading of <a href="https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-42/session-1/bill-210" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" hreflang="en">Bill 210, Fairness for Residential Superintendents, Janitors and Caretakers Act, 2020</a>, from NDP MPP Gilles Bisson. It would ensure a person who is employed as the superintendent, janitor or caretaker of a residential building and resides in the building is entitled to the minimum wage.
Second Reading of <a href="https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-42/session-1/bill-224" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bill 224, No Time to Waste Act (Plan for Climate Action and Jobs), 2020</a>, from NDP MPPs Peter Tabuns and Bhutila Karpoche. It would require a climate crisis health action plan.
Second Reading of <a href="https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-42/session-1/bill-226" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bill 226, Broadband is an Essential Service Act, 2020</a>. NDP MPP John Vanthof. It would require a broadband connectivity strategy.

Last week, <a href="https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-42/session-1/bill-218" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" hreflang="en">Bill 218, Supporting Ontario's Recovery and Municipal Elections Act, 2020</a>, passed third reading. The controversial legislation that offers protection from lawsuits related to COVID-19 transmission, as long as the claim doesn't constitute gross negligence and the person, business or government being sued made an effort to follow public health advice. It also prohibits municipalities from using ranked ballots.
<a href="https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-42/session-1/bill-207" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" hreflang="en">Bill 207, Moving Ontario Family Law Forward Act, 2020</a>, also passed third reading. It aims to make the family law system "easier, faster and more affordable" and includes a modernization of the legal language.
PC MPP Deepak Anand introduced a private member's bill, <a href="https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-42/session-1/bill-231" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bill 231, Protecting Ontarians by Enhancing Gas Station Safety to Prevent Gas and Dash Act, 2020</a>, which would require employers at gas stations to require customers to prepay before being given gasoline. It also passed second reading and was referred to the Standing Committee on Justice Policy.
NDP MPPs France Gélinas and Jill Andrew introduced <a href="https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-42/session-1/bill-233" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bill 233, Improving Access to Health Care Act, 2020,</a> a private members' bill that would support patients with sickle cell disease and require the collection of patients' race-based data.
Liberal MPP Mitzie Hunter introduced <a href="https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-42/session-1/bill-232" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bill 232, Local Choice for Local Elections (Ranked Ballot By-Laws), 2020,</a> a private member's bill that would restore municipalities' ability to conduct elections by ranked ballots.
PC MPP Kaleed Rasheed introduced <a href="https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-42/session-1/bill-230" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" hreflang="en">Bill 230, Front-line and Essential Service Worker Week Act, 2020</a>, a private member's bill that would proclaim the third full week of March in each year as Front-line and Essential Service Worker Week.
