The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) is the statutory body responsible for regulating Ontario’s capital markets in accordance with the mandate established in the provincial Securities Act and the Commodity Futures Act. The Commission’s mandate is to provide protection to investors from unfair, improper or fraudulent practices, to foster fair and efficient capital markets and confidence in capital markets, and to contribute to the stability of the financial system and the reduction of systemic risk. This mandate is performed through policy, operational, adjudication and enforcement work. The OSC also contributes to national and global securities regulation development.

The Communications & Public Affairs Branch plays an integral role in promoting the OSC’s reputation as an effective and responsive securities regulator. The Branch provides strategic communications advice to ensure the timely and effective communication of OSC priorities, policies and actions across all corporate channels. These include stakeholder engagement, executive remarks, corporate materials, internal communications, media relations, issues management, the OSC Website and intranet, and enterprise social media.

The Senior Editorial Specialist plays a critically important corporate communications role at the OSC. The Senior Editorial Specialist advises on and develops clear, effective organizational communications for stakeholders, including executive-level speeches, corporate reporting materials, OSC reports and publications, and online web content. They work directly with executive and senior management teams to develop key messages and write content that clearly articulates the OSC’s corporate strategy and regulatory focus, enhances the OSC brand and advances key business priorities and policy initiatives.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Executive communications: Advise on strategic approach and positioning, develop and execute proactive visibility strategies in support of the OSC Chair, Executive Director and Vice Chairs to demonstrate organizational and individual thought-leadership. Develop broad organizational themes, research and draft content for speeches and briefing materials targeted at senior-level audiences, including keynote addresses, fireside chats and conference panels; make recommendations on overarching messaging, most effective format and content; accurately reflect the ideas and position of senior leadership in a way that resonates with the audience.
  • Contribute to enterprise communications strategy through projects and publications that protect and promote the OSC’s reputation, ensure compliance with statutory reporting requirements, support organizational priorities and strengthen stakeholder relationships.
  • Lead project management for the OSC’s annual report, including planning, content development, collaboration with multiple internal stakeholders, approvals, and management of external vendor relationships.
  • Develop senior-level content and communications strategies for organizational projects including the OSC annual report and provide planning and editorial support for large scale corporate events such as OSC Dialogue.
  • Develop and update organizational key messages and fact sheets that convey the OSC’s position and the current status of regulatory work.
  • Generate content for key sections of the OSC website, working collaboratively on cross-branch and cross-functional teams and capturing the organizational brand.
  • Manage competing deadlines; work quickly and effectively within tight timelines; work according to executives’ schedule and communication style.
  • Establish and maintain solid relationships with executives and Senior Management Team; exercise discretion in dealing with highly sensitive/confidential information.
  • Assimilate and organize large amounts of information and multiple themes into professional, senior-level speeches and other written materials.

You offer the following:

  • Undergraduate degree, preferably in Communications, Journalism or Public Policy.
  • Eight or more years of public policy, communications or public affairs experience, preferably in a financial services or regulatory environment.
  • A forward thinker and strong storyteller who can effectively connect the OSC, its Chair and executive leadership team to investors, employees and other stakeholders in Ontario, across Canada and globally.
  • Superior writing and editing skills with a strong ability to generate high quality, technically accurate and concise executive remarks and corporate communications materials for diverse audiences and formats.
  • Proven project management expertise with internal clients and external vendors, such as design firms, printers, translators and web design firms.
  • Solid understanding of the regulatory framework and the Canadian capital markets, industry players and regulatory policies, and the ability to stay on top of emerging issues in a proactive fashion.
  • Self-starting, entrepreneurial approach to supporting branch and organizational goals, as well as identifying upcoming communication needs and opportunities.
  • Completion of the Canadian Securities Course or equivalent is an asset. (e.g. CPIR designation)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop relationships among a broad range of stakeholders, both internally and externally.
