Headlines

It's over. The Toronto Raptors are NBA Champions, taking the series against the Golden State Warriors in six games. But the celebrations weren't all fun and games. There was a shooting near Yonge-Dundas Square after the win, the Toronto Star reports. And a couple of police cars were damaged in the jubilance, Global reports.

Another attack ad paid for by union-backed group Engage Canada tied Premier Doug Ford to federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer Thursday night during the Raptors game, CTV News reports. This one is aimed at raising fears that Scheer would implement an "American-style" privatized health-care system. The group did not say how much they spent on the ad, CTV News reports.

In case you missed our stories Wednesday:

  • Autism families in a state of ‘acute crisis,’ says new report
  • About 2,400 public servants take buyouts, saving government $215 million, Bethlenfalvy says
  • ‘Jurisdiction’ vs. ‘democratic process’: Could the Toronto council cuts case go to the Supreme Court?

In other news:

The City of Burlington is out more than half a million dollars after a staff member fell for a phishing scam, the Canadian Press reports.

Public Health Sudbury and Districts is concerned about an increase in whooping cough in the area, the Sudbury Star reports.

A proposed federal ban on single-use plastics is being welcomed by some businesses in North Bay, the North Bay Nugget reports.

Forty per cent of Torontonians don't trust police use of facial recognition technology, the Star reports.

A Kitchener court will test a federal prostitution law, the Waterloo Region Record reports.

Fittingly enough, Marathon tops the list of most-active Canadian communities, CBC reports.

Kevin Durant isn't the only one who'll need achilles surgery -- Toronto Mayor John Tory will undergo the operation as well, CTV News reports.

And in the opinion pages:

  • Finance Minister Vic Fedeli writes about Ontario's debt problem, and how his government plans to tackle it.
  • Rodrigo Samayoa writes in support of a Canadian right to repair bill.
  • Randall Denley writes that Ontario doesn't need a federal plan to deal with plastic waste.
  • Edward Keenan writes on the joy the Raptors caused with their win last night.
  • Andrew Dreschel writes about NDP Leader Andrea Horwath's upcoming leadership vote, including speculation that the Hamilton mayor's seat beckons.
